Steel vs Aluminum vs Wood Garage Doors in Calgary

For most Calgary homes, an insulated steel door is the best balance of dent resistance, upkeep and price. Steel woodgrain gives you the wood look without the maintenance. Aluminum suits modern full-view styles but dents easily. Real wood looks best and demands the most care, and Calgary's weather is hard on it.

The four materials behave very differently under hail, rapid chinook temperature swings and months of freeze-thaw. Gauge, weight and spring sizing then decide how the door feels to live with for the next 15 to 20 years. This guide covers each material in turn so you can choose before you price anything.

Installing a new door starts at the choice of material, so it is worth settling first. If you are already comparing quotes, our garage door installation service page covers how an install works.

What does Calgary weather do to a garage door?

Calgary tests a garage door three ways: hail, chinook temperature swings and repeated freeze-thaw. Hail dents thin or soft panels, chinooks can swing the temperature by 20 degrees or more in a day, and meltwater that refreezes at the bottom edge punishes any material that absorbs moisture.

Hail. Calgary sits in the heart of Alberta's hail corridor, and a summer storm can leave hundreds of impact marks across a south or west-facing door. Panel thickness, skin material and whether the door has an insulated core behind the skin all change how a hit shows up.

Chinooks. A chinook can lift winter temperatures well above freezing and drop them again within hours. Materials expand and contract with each swing, which loosens fasteners over time and cracks finishes that cannot flex.

Freeze-thaw. Meltwater runs under the bottom seal, refreezes, and works into any exposed edge. Our guide to how Calgary's freeze-thaw cycles damage garage doors goes through the damage in detail. For materials, the point is simple: anything that soaks up moisture or cannot be sealed well will age faster here.

Is a steel garage door a good choice for Calgary?

Yes. Steel is the most common residential garage door material in Calgary because it resists warping, takes hail better than aluminum and needs little upkeep. Its weak points are surface dents from a hard strike and rust where the coating is scratched through.

Steel sectional doors are built from galvanized steel skins, factory painted, usually over an insulated core. The zinc coating and baked-on paint are what stop rust. A deep scratch or a dent that cracks the paint exposes bare metal, and a touch-up in the same season keeps that spot from rusting.

Dents. Steel dents rather than cracks. A thicker steel skin and a core of polyurethane foam behind it both help the panel resist denting, because the foam supports the skin. A hollow, uninsulated steel door shows hail marks much more easily than an insulated one.

Maintenance. Wash it a couple of times a year, touch up chips, and lubricate the moving hardware. That is about it. Our seasonal garage door maintenance checklist lists the yearly tasks.

Tradeoff. Steel is not the lightest material and it is not the most dent-proof. A thicker panel costs more, and a very hard hailstone can still leave a mark on any steel door.

What does steel gauge mean, and is 24 gauge better than 25 or 26?

Gauge is the thickness of the steel, and a lower number means thicker steel. A 24 gauge skin is thicker and stiffer than a 25 or 26 gauge skin, so it resists dents better, but it is heavier and the difference is only noticeable on an uninsulated or thinly built door.

Typical sheet steel thickness runs roughly like this. 24 gauge is about 0.6 mm, 25 gauge is about 0.53 mm and 26 gauge is about 0.45 mm. Budget doors often use 27 gauge or thinner. These are standard sheet-steel figures, and each manufacturer builds its sections a little differently.

Gauge is only one piece of dent resistance. A 26 gauge skin bonded to a full foam core can resist a hailstone better than a 24 gauge skin on a hollow frame, because the foam backs up the steel. When you compare quotes, ask for the gauge, whether the core is polyurethane or polystyrene and whether the skin is bonded to it.

If your door faces the direction hail usually arrives from, spending on a thicker skin plus a bonded core is the upgrade most likely to show on the surface. For a door sheltered by a deep front porch or a mature tree, a standard gauge is a reasonable place to save. Our comparison of Clopay, Amarr and Wayne Dalton shows how those brands describe their steel builds.

How does an aluminum garage door perform in Calgary?

Aluminum does not rust and is light, which makes it a fit for modern full-view doors with glass panels in an aluminum frame. It dents more easily than steel, though, and hail leaves marks that do not pop back out. In Calgary it works best where hail exposure is low or the look is the priority.

Aluminum full-view doors are the clean, contemporary style: wide aluminum frames holding clear or frosted glass. They suit homes where a bright garage or a modern front elevation is the goal.

Rust. Aluminum does not rust, so a damp spring or a road-spray winter does not corrode the frame the way it can corrode a damaged steel skin. Finishes can still fade or chalk over time.

Dents. The metal is softer than steel. A hard hailstone or a basketball can leave a dent that stays. Glass panels are tempered or laminated, but they are the part of the door most likely to need replacing after a serious storm.

Insulation. Full-view doors usually give up some insulation, since glass and thin aluminum conduct heat. Insulated glass units and thermally broken frames exist, but they raise the price, and they matter most when the garage is attached or heated.

Commercial use. Aluminum is also common on storefronts and business entries, and the trade-offs there are different. We cover that in our steel vs aluminum commercial doors guide.

What is a wood-look garage door, and how is it different from real wood?

A wood-look door is steel or composite built to look like wood. Steel woodgrain has an embossed or printed grain finish over a steel skin. Composite overlay doors bond a wood-look layer over a steel frame. Both give the look of stained wood without wood's upkeep or its weight.

Steel woodgrain. The skin is embossed with a grain pattern and finished in a stain-like colour. It keeps steel's dent behaviour and low upkeep, and the finish is baked on at the factory. Close up it reads as steel, and from the street it reads as wood, which is the point.

Composite or overlay. These doors use a steel frame with a composite overlay on the face. They can look closer to real wood, with deeper grain and carved details, and they do not swell or rot. Pricing is usually above standard steel, so ask for the exact spec when you quote.

Where they fit. Craftsman, farmhouse and modern-rustic homes, and any street where the neighbourhood style leans toward wood. For a Calgary climate, they are the practical way to get that look without the refinishing schedule.

Tradeoff. The finish cannot be sanded and re-stained like real wood. Deep scratches are a factory-colour touch-up job, so check what touch-up options exist before you order.

Is a real wood garage door worth it in Calgary?

Real wood is the most attractive option and the most demanding. In Calgary it needs regular refinishing, since dry winters, chinook swings and meltwater at the bottom edge all work on the wood. It is a good choice only if you will keep to a maintenance schedule.

Wood panels can be custom-sized, stained to match a front door and detailed in ways steel cannot match. That is why wood stays popular on high-end custom homes.

Moisture. Wood absorbs water. At the bottom edge of the door, where meltwater pools and refreezes, panels can swell, split or rot if the finish fails. Keeping the bottom seal in good shape helps, and our guide to garage door weather seals explains what to check.

Refinishing. Expect to re-coat or re-stain on a regular schedule, and sooner on south and west faces that take the most sun. Skipping a cycle lets moisture in and is how most wood doors fail early.

Weight. Wood is heavy, and the weight affects the springs and the opener. See the next section.

Insulation. A solid wood panel offers modest insulation on its own. Many wood doors are built as an insulated frame with a wood face, and you should ask for the actual construction.

How does door material change weight and spring sizing?

Heavier doors need stronger springs. A torsion spring is sized to the exact weight of the door so the door feels nearly weightless when you lift it by hand. Swapping materials without re-sizing the springs leaves the door unbalanced, which strains the opener and shortens spring life.

As a rough guide, an insulated steel double door weighs in the low hundreds of pounds, aluminum full-view doors are usually lighter than steel, and real wood doors are commonly the heaviest. Exact weights vary by size, panel build and glass, so a measured weight from your installer is the number to use. Weights quoted here are general trade ranges and not specific to any manufacturer.

Why it matters. A balanced door should stay put when lifted halfway. A door that drops or shoots up is out of balance, and the usual cause is the wrong spring, a worn spring or a change in door weight. Our guide to torsion vs extension springs explains how each type handles heavier doors.

Doubles. A double door carries more weight across a wider span, and spring replacement on a double is its own job. See our double garage door spring replacement article.

Adding insulation or glass. Choosing an insulated or window-heavy build adds weight, so the springs should be sized for the door you actually ordered, not for a standard model of the same size. Springs are a safety-critical part, and replacing them is work for a trained installer, not a weekend project.

Which insulation option should you choose with each material?

Insulation is a separate decision from material, and most Calgary homes with an attached garage benefit from it. Steel and wood-look doors are commonly available with polyurethane or polystyrene cores. Aluminum full-view doors have fewer insulation options, and a solid wood door depends on how it is built.

Polyurethane foam is injected and bonds to the skin, which stiffens the panel and resists dents. Polystyrene is a rigid board that is cut and fitted, and it generally insulates less per inch than polyurethane. Both are usually available in a two- or three-layer sandwich of steel, foam and an inner steel or vinyl backer.

R-value measures insulation, and a higher number means better resistance to heat flow. The R-value printed on a door is for the panel and does not account for gaps around the edges, so the seals matter as well.

We cover the cost question in full in our insulated garage door guide for Calgary. The short version is that insulation matters most for an attached or heated garage, and matters less for a detached shed-style garage that nobody heats.

Which material fits which kind of Calgary home?

Match the material to how the garage is used, which way the door faces and how much upkeep you are willing to do. There is no single best material, but there is usually a clear best fit once those three things are known.

If your door is damaged but the rest is sound, you may not need a new door at all. A single dented section can often be replaced, and our article on garage door panel replacement explains when that works.

What does a new garage door cost in Calgary, and how do you get one?

C Town Doors lists new single garage door installations from $2,000 + GST and double doors from $2,550 + GST. The final price depends on the material, gauge, insulation, window layout and any hardware or opener work, so a firm number comes after someone looks at your opening.

Those figures are starting points taken from our garage door installation page. Choosing steel woodgrain, a composite overlay, glass or real wood moves the quote above them, and we will give you the figure for your specific door before you commit.
